Rabbi's Message: Finding Meaning in Tzedakah
June 1, 2026
In this month's message, I want to reflect on the Jewish value of tzedakah. Often translated as 'charity,' tzedakah actually comes from the root word 'tzedek,' meaning justice or righteousness. Giving is not just an act of kindness — it is an obligation, a way of bringing justice to the world.
The Torah teaches that we should give according to our means. Maimonides outlined eight levels of giving, with the highest form being to help a person become self-sufficient.
As we enter the summer months, I encourage each of you to find your own way to practice tzedakah — whether through our community campaigns, volunteering your time, or supporting those in need in our broader community.
With blessings for a meaningful summer,
Rabbi Emeritus Judith Levin
